Kinja'd!!!

It’s getting to be that time of year for our younger Opponauts, so let’s share the best car you went to prom in (because real jalops don’t take limos). Easily my best ride was sophomore year, when my date and I accompanied one of my close friends and his date in his dad’s 2001 Audi S4. His dad used to track it pretty frequently, and it’s got a six speed stick, K04 turbos, OZ racing wheels, a 1.5” drop on a stiffened suspension, a tune around 400hp, upgraded brakes, and probably a bunch of other stuff his dad never told me about (not the car pictured).

Hilariously, though the entire ride there had been nothing but buttery smooth shifts, my friend made one terrible mistake right at the end. He didn’t notice that it was valet parking when we pulled up to the venue and when he went to turn it around and pull up to the valet, he ended up stalling the car and accidentally turning on the wipers and the hazards right in front of the entire “red carpet” of parents and spectators.

On the way back, we hit a deserted stretch of highway and I think he took it up to like 130mph or something (high schoolers are smart, right?). I definitely got much more of a kick out of it than his date did. This thing was a pretty neat little sleeper, and his dad still has it. I’ve ridden in it many times, but I still haven’t fulfilled one of my longtime goals of getting to drive it.

Other notable prom cars from my time:

Senior year I took my mom’s Dodge Magnum, because RWD wagon outclasses any stretch limo. Plus, no need to share the car with anybody but my date.

Junior year (before I could drive so I had little choice in the matter), I hilariously gave zero fucks and showed up with my date and a couple friends in the back of an old Chevy Blazer. This prom was a low point in my high school social life and that relationship.

The guy who lives across the street from me took a 70s Rolls–Royce from his dad’s dealership. That was pretty cool.

Pretty sure some douchecanoe drove his parents orange Pontiac Solstice one year.

What about you Oppo, any good prom car stories?

Drove my mothers Porsche Cayenne V8 one year, and then the other year took my E39 M5 after I got that as my DD. I cant complain...

I took one of these there. I was not happy about it.

Also, I only had one prom, in grade 12. That’s how it was where I grew up.

2 weeks ago I went to prom in my 1965 Dodge Dart. If you’re wearing a suit in an old mopar might as well...

Van swag haha. At my school, you could only buy tickets as a junior or senior, but you could take somebody younger (or older) as your date.

Shoes. I’m British; we still don’t really know how to ‘prom’. School discos, as they’re known, tend not to be the most glamorous affairs; for my Sixth-Form leavers’ do, we basically rented out the space above a snooker club and got drunk with our teachers.

Having drank in a snooker club myself, that’s much more fun than a bunch of teenagers getting way too dramatic and spending way too much money on an event that will seem hilariously insignificant in like two years.

Yeah, the grade 12 student could take a younger person as their date, but only the grade 12 could buy tickets. I did go in grade 11 as a volunteer to help out.

I don’t really disagree, but I think the pageantry of it all does hold some appeal. I don’t think I’d ever want to actually attend a proper, American-style prom as a student, but it’d be fun to compare the reality with all those American High School-set films and TV shows we used to get over here.

Speaking of, if you’re ever interested in what it’s like to be a student at British ‘High School’, give this series a watch:

It started airing while I was pretty much exactly the same age as the principle characters, and the accuracy is straight-up scary sometimes.

Hahaha I’ve seen most of the series, great show! My sister’s husband is actually English, and his thoughts on American prom were basically the exact same as yours. For his most recent (29th?) birthday, my sister threw him a huge party with the theme of “American Prom” so he could see what it was like (with slightly more drinking of course)

Meant to add this on to my last reply: needless to say, a bunch of late 20/early 30 somethings dressed in ridiculous formalwear dancing around fake high school dance decorations was pretty hilarious. My brother-in-law was certainly puzzled by some of the rituals, although he was crowned prom king haha

Prom car highlight would have been the Lexus GS400 my dad leased “for me” - that I could only drive if I was staying at his house.

School dance car highlight would have to be when my date’s dad actually let me drive her to the dance in his 1995 Dodge Viper. Her dress got a bit burned/melted on the side exhaust.

That was before I started drinking. Now, I don’t know if I could handle such a thing without it haha. There were definitely some shenanigans going on, since obviously it wasn’t legal for the students to drink. Girls bringing in hairspray bottles filled with vodka, that sort of thing. Hilarious.

I got pretty into it, mostly to make the date happy. Went out and bought a nice and ridiculous bright pink tie to match her dress and everything. The silk was of course immediately torn to shreds by the beading on her dress, so I only wore it that one time. Hideous color anyways though so not really a loss.

I lived on the opposite side of the city from them. So they went to a different high school. They were going to be my “dates” the both of them, BUT their school scheduled their prom the same night as my school scheduled mine. This was Vancouver BC so it’s quite large city (at that time it was a little over 2.1M) so there were many highschools and some nights overlap.

Like KirkyV said about the UK, school proms aren’t such a thing in New Zealand.I did have a pretty awesome pair of wedding cars , though.

My Dad and I did spend most of the night before giving the white one (which, for added awesomeness, is my grandmother’s daily driver) a much-needed tune-up, which meant that I ended up with grease under my fingernails for the ceremony.

My car at the time got prom duty both years (2007 and 2008). It was a ‘99 Grand Am GT1. Plastic-fantastic GM malaise, whatever. I loved it and it was a damn good car for me.

I detailed it and applied leather conditioner to the seats the day before prom so my girlfriend (wife now) kept sliding off the seat when I took curves thanks to her crazy huge dress (it barely fit in the car).

Grandma insisted on pictures. Voila. My nerdtastic self circa May 2008.
